The Experimentation Process (G.R.O.W.S)

One of the key principles of growth marketing is experimentation. This means trying out more strategies and tactics, letting yourself get comfortable with failure, and using experiments to accelerate the growth learning curve. This method results in realising the tactics that can create virality in your startup much quicker than traditional methods.

At the heart of the experimentation process lies the data-gathering process. The key to this is trusting the G.R.O.W.S process.

The process consists of 5 steps, which are as follows:

1. Gather Ideas

Brainstorm as many experiment ideas as possible with your team.

5. Study Data

Analyse the data from your experiment and decide on the next steps to take: learn or implement!

2. Rank Ideas

Use the ICE framework (impact, confidence, ease) to prioritise which ideas have the highest ROI. This is basically an easier way of sticking to the 20/80 rule.

4. Work, Work, Work

Execute your experiment in a 2-4 week window. (The time period of running your experiment may vary based on your business size, industry and model).

3. Outline Experiments

Choose your next steps and design your experiment as quickly and small as possible. The main question here is: what is the one metric that matters the most within this experiment, and what is the minimum amount of data required to validate it?

Understanding ICE Scoring

The ICE Scoring Model is a relatively quick way to assign a numerical value to different potential ideas to prioritize them based on their relative value, using three parameters: Impact, Confidence, and Ease.

How many ideas have you had that you’ve never actually actioned? It’s overwhelming right!

ICE scoring is basically a “good enough” estimation for your ideas, that allows you to prioritise them and move them into implementation quickly.
